You are absolutely correct in your comments that the vast majority of people in North American celebrate Christmas, whether or not they are religious. Retailers make most of their profit during this time of the year because of people shopping for Christmas. Christmas is an important part of our tradition and culture and has been since the country was founded. This debate is just as much about preserving our culture and traditions as it is about religion.
The only people who would be offended by hearing Merry Christmas are narrow minded racists, so why are we allowing our culture to be eroded for their sake? I proudly celebrate Christmas, and of course I respect other religions, and I am utterly fed up with the people who are trying to take away my cultural and deny me the freedom to celebrate my religion.
